On the evening of DEC. 4, 2018, Rotarian Mary McNair presented the Coats for Kids program to the 100 Women Who Care Kings County as a worthy recipient of their giving.
We were som pleased when they announced at their meeting that “The charity chosen to receive our collective donation tonight of $6900.00 was the COATS FOR KIDS program of the Sussex Rotary Club. Tonight was the 5th anniversary of forming our group and interestingly enough, our very first recipient 5 years ago was the Coats for Kids!! To date we have cumulatively donated just under $159,000.00 to 21 Kings County charities and non-profits.”
Mary said “We are so pleased the 100 Women Who Care Kings County choose our Coats for Kids program! Thank you!
The Rotary Club of Sussex began this initiative in 2001 and we work with the administration of elementary schools in Sussex, Sussex Corner, Apohaqui, Norton, Belleisle and Havelock to determine the needs each year.
Being ready for the elements is key to physical wellness as well as developing positive social skills and mental wellness. Children have improved self confidence, greater peer acceptance and improved school attendance when they are prepared with basic necessities.”
And most importantly, a huge thankyou to the 100 Women Who Care of Kings County for the great work they do in Kings County! It is greatly appreciated by all!
Coats for Kids needs your support. In 2016, the Coats for Kids program encountered a significant increase in need. In the largest area school, Sussex Elementary, the need actually doubled from that of the previous year – 65 coats just for one school. We are committed to making sure that these little kids get the warm clothing they need before the harsh cold weather sets in.
How can you help? We are asking for your financial support to meet this need right here in our community. Your personal contribution for Coats for Kids, no matter the amount, written out to the Rotary Club of Sussex Charitable Trusts, Inc., will earn you a tax receipt, and go directly to funding warm clothes for elementary school kids.
For many years, the Sussex Rotary Club has canvassed the surrounding elementary schools of Sussex, Sussex Corner, Belleisle, Havelock, and Apohaqui working with the teachers to identify children that might be in need of winter clothing including coats, boots, mittens. We deliver the certificates to the schools, and the school staff ensures they go to deserving children.
This year’s need has resulted in the Sussex Rotary Club issuing over 100 certificates valued at $75.00, so the need is high, and your support today is needed more than ever before!

The Rotary Club of Sussex Charitable Trusts was very pleased to be the recipient of the first charitable donation of $5000.00 by the 100 Women Who Care of Kings County. The Group chose Rotary’s Coats for Kids Project and the charitable donation will help the Club provide winter coats for children. Pictured above is Sally Kierstead of the 100 Women Who Care of Kings County, and Rotarian Shawn Leonard, chair of this year’s Coats for Kids project. The 100 Women Who Care of Kings County meet once per quarter and select 3 charities to present at their meeting. At the end of the evening the women vote to pledge their support to the winning entry by donating $100.00 each.
Fifty women of all ages have signed up over the past two months to join the charitable organization, and there is still room for more to become involved according to the Sussex Herald. The group meets four times per year for one hour with each member making a $100.00 donation.
