Ellen’s Tour 2019

Allan Price introduced Molly Aiton, who works at Agropur in Human Resource and Katie Scott, who is a Nurse Manager at Sussex Health Centre at our April 15, 2019 meeting. Both are avid outdoor enthusiasts and spoke to us about the upcoming Ellen’s Tour for 2019.

Ellen Watters, a friend of Molly and Katie, was driven, motivated as well as a motivator and supporter of others. She encouraged others to be the best version of themselves. Ellen passed away several days after being struck by a vehicle while biking in December 2016.

The three friends often dreamed together of creating cycling events or adventure tourism in Sussex. Molly and Katie, along with the support of Ellen’s family, created “Ellen’s Tour de Sussex.

June 15, 2019, will mark the third annual event. With each event, the number of participants has increased, and new routes for the rides used. This year there will be three distances 25km, 75km and 115km leaving from Leonard’s Gate.

There is an “after-party” for socializing with a BBQ from Geirmundl’s with all the fixings, live music and local craft beer. This event highlights Sussex with the rolling hills, the local food and drinks at the after-party as well as door prizes featuring uniquely Sussex products.

The goal of the event is to have fun, raise awareness for road safety and equality for females in sports as well as to raise funds for the “Ellen’s Cycling Society.” Ellen’s Cycling Society provides bursaries to up and coming athletes as well as scholarships to students who demonstrate Ellen’s qualities, such as being a positive motivator in their community regardless of involvement in sport.

Molly and Katie encouraged everyone to spread the word about the event, sign up or come on board as a volunteer.
