Sussex Rotarian Barry Reicker PassingThe Rotary Club of Sussex was shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of one of our members, Barry Reicker, on June 17th, 2023 (pictured at left, with Past President and Barry's Membership Sponsor, Angie Cummings) Barry was a recent addition to our Rotary Membership; a stepson of long-standing and involved Rotarian Bob Black. We are honoured that Barry was interred wearing his Rotary Membership Pin. Like most things, Barry jumped into our Rotary Club with both feet and immediately got involved in our BrewFest Fundraiser. He and his lovely partner Jenn were our Grill Masters for the fundraising event and fostered many friendships that day. Though his membership was short, Barry left a lasting impact on our Club and his legacy will continue. A donation to The Rotary International Foundation has been made in his memory. Barry is survived by his young son, Frankie. A Go Fund Me Page has been created to help support Frankie's future and education. Our thoughts and condolences are with Barry’s many close friends and family at this time. |

Member Profile - Paula FlemingName: Paula Fleming, Rotary Club of Sussex Secretary Occupation: Office Manager, Dr. Mark Fleming Family Dentistry Joined Rotary: In 2018: I was recruited by my wonderful friend, Lisa Brown. My main interest in joining was to do international work, and so I became chair of the International Committee. I’d love to travel to Guatemala to help build one of the many smoke-free stoves we’ve funded, or to the orphanage in South Africa to work on our water, sanitation and hygiene education (WASH) program. We’ve also sent shelter boxes to Haiti and Ukraine, oxygen concentrators to India, and helped fund a mobile health clinic in Ghana. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished so far! Favorite Rotary activity: I love hands-on service projects in our community, like helping to box groceries at the Salvation Army, or decorating Smile cookies for the Little Jackie Fund. We’ve also organized work days where we go to a senior’s home and weed their gardens, paint their fence or repair their deck. It’s that feeling you get when you know you’ve made a difference in someone’s day. Rotary Goals: As a retired nurse, I believe I can be helpful working on any number of those international efforts that I’ve mentioned, and now that COVID restrictions have lifted, hopefully I can make that happen. |

Member Highlight - Sheri ShannonName: Sheri Shannon, Rotary Club of Sussex President Occupation: Director of development and donor relations, Inclusion New Brunswick, a nonprofit helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Joined Rotary: In 2017. My father was a Rotarian for 37 years in Fredericton, and when I moved to Sussex, I wanted to be more involved in the community. Favorite Rotary activity: I really do enjoy the meetings. The reason I got involved with Rotary is the community involvement that we have. It’s just a time for us to gather, break bread and really try to come together because we’re all there to give back to the community and make it a better place for our families to grow and succeed. I enjoy the social aspect of Rotary. I love the time we have outside of our regular meetings and the friendships that I’ve formed. Rotary goals: I want to continue the Rotary legacy of giving back by way of working with our stakeholders and assist them with projects that will better our community. I’d like to raise awareness of what Rotary is and what it stands for, and I’d like to increase our membership and its participation. |
World Polio Day 2022Monday, Oct. 24 was World Polio Day, addressing a disease whose eradication has long been a central mission for Rotary. Paula Fleming shared some key information about World Polio Day, a disabling and life-threatening disease caused by poliovirus. The virus spreads from person to person and can invade an infected person's spinal cord, causing paralysis. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines to prevent polio. Those vaccines cost 14 cents each, most of the money going to frontline workers, most of whom are women, who are paid $4-5 per day... |
Sussex Area Domestic Violence OutreachAngie Parlee of Sussex Area Domestic Violence Outreach was our first guest speaker of the new Rotary year. Angie shared the harrowing story of just how wide and deep an impact domestic violence has on families in the area, many of whom turn to her organization in desperate circumstances and often after multiple, previously unsuccessful attempts to leave their abusive situations. Angie, a survivor of abuse herself, shared the courage it takes to seek such help and the difficult road that still lies ahead for such survivors even after they seek it. Many have to rebuild their lives from scratch, navigating family courts, the RCMP and dire financial straits, and Sussex Area Domestic Violence Outreach offers critical help in that process for women and their families. |

World Polio Day 2021The Rotary Club of Sussex and the Interact Club of SRHS met today to raise the “End Polio Now” flag. World Polio Day is celebrated each year on October 24th to raise awareness of Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio forever. Poliovirus is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. It can lead to muscle paralysis, disability, bone deformities and death. The first initiative to wipe out polio through mass vaccination of children began in 1985 with the launch of PolioPlus by Rotary International. According to the World Health Organization, as long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio. Failure to eradicate polio from these last remaining strongholds could result in as many as 200 000 new cases every year, within ten years, worldwide. Many survivors of polio will develop Post-Polio Syndrome later in life. The symptoms include weakness, fatigue, muscle atrophy, breathing and swallowing problems. Up to 50 to 70 percent of polio survivors may experience the disabling effects of Post-Polio Syndrome 25 to 45 years after their initial recovery from polio. There are approximately 125,000 Canadian polio survivors. Only two countries still have cases of wild poliovirus, Afghanistan & Pakistan. Rotary International will not quit until we eradicate poliovirus for good. |

Taylor studied Business at Loyalist College in Belleville Ontario. She moved to Sussex almost three years ago on a whim with her now fiancé. She considers New Brunswick a completely new experience and is loving every minute of it! Taylor works as a Small Business Advisor & Agriculture Specialist for Scotiabank. She has always been amazed by business owners and their entrepreneurial spirit! She feels very lucky to be able to help grow businesses within Sussex. Her favourite part of the job is learning about her clients and helping big dreams become realities. It doesn’t hurt that she also gets to pet A LOT of cows and she considers that to be a huge job perk! She also operates her own small business located in La Bella Si Salon & Spa! The Glow Station is Taylor’s passion project and creative outlet. She loves empowering other women to look and feel their best! Taylor has been a Rotary member for just about a year now. She was introduced to Rotary by Julie Matthews and after the first meeting, she was hooked and loved the opportunity to learn more about Sussex, support the community, and meet like-minded individuals! Cops and Coats PartnershipOnce again this year, the Rotary Club of Sussex is proud to assist the Shop with a Cop Program (SWAC). The Coats for Kids Program last year provided all six SWAC children with funds to purchase winter outerwear. As they were out “shopping” this donation allowed them the opportunity to purchase a new coat, boots, or whatever they needed. As well, it covered the cost to assist in purchasing all the children’s siblings' hats, mitts, and gloves for the winter season. This is a well-received addition to the program and we are so excited to announce we will be doing the same thing this year! Presenting this year's cheque to assist with the purchase of winter wear is Rotary Club of Sussex member, Taylor McWhirter. If you are willing to donate a new or gently used coat, they can be dropped off at the Scotiabank on Main Street or the Salvation Army Thrift Store. If you wish to make a cash or gift certificate donation, please feel free to reach out! |
Member Profile - Lou McNamaraThis week - let's meet Rotary Member, Lou McNamara! Also, if you read until the end of the bio, let's see if you can guess which one of the three facts Lou stated is a lie! "My name is Lou McNamara, and I have been a member of the Rotary Club of Sussex for just about 17 years. My background is Radio Broadcasting and have been in radio media for just over 40 years, beginning with training in Toronto, Halifax, and then finally starting my actual on-air career with Humber Valley Broadcasting in Port Aux Basques NF, where I met my incredible wife…who puts up with me to this very day. So far so good! Presently I’m General Manager/Marketing for CJCW Radio in Sussex, joining Maritime Broadcasting Systems in 1986. In my role with CJCW Radio I have certified myself in Radio Marketing, helping local businesses grow their sales and marketing base. Assisting businesses, in whatever way I can, to increase their bottom line and contributing to their success has been the most satisfying part of my job. I’ve always said that Sussex and area is blessed to have its very own Radio Station. For those who own a business, or manage a business, I would strongly suggest joining the Rotary Club of Sussex. Since joining Sussex Rotary, and as a past President, I’ve got to know so many wonderful and kind business people with one common goal- to help our local Sussex and area, while at the same time developing their own leadership skills. With weekly lunchtime meetings I’ve found it so easy and convenient to attend. If you’re in business and would be interested in tangibly giving back to this area, I would highly recommend the Rotary Club of Sussex, where you can network with other business people, while at the same time giving back to this area." Which one is true?

Sussex Rotary Coats for KidsThis year, the Rotary Club of Sussex is thrilled to be assisting with the Coats for Kids 2020 campaign. Each year, we try hard to put our attention on community needs. We have been working with organizations in the Sussex area to help meet the needs of children who need to stay warm this winter. We are so pleased to be able to work with the following partners this year to ensure as many children as possible will receive a winter jacket for the winter months: Each organization has a specific network of children that we can support. Maybe you have a gently used coat for donation or want to purchase a new coat to donate? Maybe you just want to make a financial contribution or purchase a gift card for this purpose? If the answer is yes - we want to hear from you. Starting immediately, we are accepting coats at the The Salvation Army (138 Main Street, Sussex) or the Bank of Nova Scotia (635 Main Street) or by contacting us via Facebook so we can make arrangements for pick up. Rotarians help each other, and collectively help others. We look forward to working with our community partners on this important initiative! . |

Member Profile - Robert "JC" LockhartThis week, let's meet Robert Lockhart! Did you know in May of this year, Robert celebrated 50 years as a Rotary Member? You are an inspiration to many Robert! What a milestone! “My first Rotary meeting was in Dec., 1953 when my father took me to the annual Kentville Rotary children’s Christmas party where he, and my grandfather before him, were Rotarians. I knew right then that I wanted to join this group- they had ice cream, Tom & Jerry cartoons, gifts! Not to disappoint a prospective future Rotarian, Dad arranged for me to have “my” Rotary Dinner every Monday at my Great Aunts who lived next door, a weekly dinner I had right up until I graduated from Acadia University and joined NBTel in Saint John on May 20th, 1969. Through Rotary, I gained so many mentors that enhanced my career and life through their friendships. I have been able to give back to the community through seniors projects like the Rotary Admiral Beatty restoration and Rotary Senior Citizen’s Housing, for the youth through the Boys’ & Girls’ Club and Rotary Foundation projects, and to help make PolioPlus a reality. My proudest Rotary moment was on Dec. 25, 2014 when I presented our family of six with Paul Harris Fellowships.“ Robert is a Paul Harris Fellow, a Past President of The Rotary Club of Saint John 1984-85 and is a current honorary member of the Sussex Rotary Club where he has been the Assistant Treasurer and is the Secretary-Treasurer of the Club’s Charitable Trusts. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of the First World War on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" (source) Wikipedia contributors. "Remembrance Day." Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia.
