The Rotary Club of Sussex was shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of one of our members, Barry Reicker, on June 17th, 2023 (pictured at left, with Past President and Barry's Membership Sponsor, Angie Cummings) Barry was a recent addition to our Rotary Membership; a stepson of long-standing and involved Rotarian Bob Black. We are honoured that Barry was interred wearing his Rotary Membership Pin. Like most things, Barry jumped into our Rotary Club with both feet and immediately got involved in our BrewFest Fundraiser. He and his lovely partner Jenn were our Grill Masters for the fundraising event and fostered many friendships that day.
Though his membership was short, Barry left a lasting impact on our Club and his legacy will continue. A donation to The Rotary International Foundation has been made in his memory.
Barry is survived by his young son, Frankie. A Go Fund Me Page has been created to help support Frankie's future and education. Our thoughts and condolences are with Barry’s many close friends and family at this time.

Name: Paula Fleming, Rotary Club of Sussex Secretary Occupation: Office Manager, Dr. Mark Fleming Family Dentistry Joined Rotary: In 2018: I was recruited by my wonderful friend, Lisa Brown. My main interest in joining was to do international work, and so I became chair of the International Committee. I’d love to travel to Guatemala to help build one of the many smoke-free stoves we’ve funded, or to the orphanage in South Africa to work on our water, sanitation and hygiene education ( WASH) program. We’ve also sent shelter boxes to Haiti and Ukraine, oxygen concentrators to India, and helped fund a mobile health clinic in Ghana. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished so far! Favorite Rotary activity: I love hands-on service projects in our community, like helping to box groceries at the Salvation Army, or decorating Smile cookies for the Little Jackie Fund. We’ve also organized work days where we go to a senior’s home and weed their gardens, paint their fence or repair their deck. It’s that feeling you get when you know you’ve made a difference in someone’s day. Rotary Goals: As a retired nurse, I believe I can be helpful working on any number of those international efforts that I’ve mentioned, and now that COVID restrictions have lifted, hopefully I can make that happen.

Name: Sheri Shannon, Rotary Club of Sussex President
Occupation: Director of development and donor relations, Inclusion New Brunswick, a nonprofit helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Joined Rotary: In 2017. My father was a Rotarian for 37 years in Fredericton, and when I moved to Sussex, I wanted to be more involved in the community.
Favorite Rotary activity: I really do enjoy the meetings. The reason I got involved with Rotary is the community involvement that we have. It’s just a time for us to gather, break bread and really try to come together because we’re all there to give back to the community and make it a better place for our families to grow and succeed. I enjoy the social aspect of Rotary. I love the time we have outside of our regular meetings and the friendships that I’ve formed.
Rotary goals: I want to continue the Rotary legacy of giving back by way of working with our stakeholders and assist them with projects that will better our community. I’d like to raise awareness of what Rotary is and what it stands for, and I’d like to increase our membership and its participation.

Monday, Oct. 24 was World Polio Day, addressing a disease whose eradication has long been a central mission for Rotary. Paula Fleming shared some key information about World Polio Day, a disabling and life-threatening disease caused by poliovirus. The virus spreads from person to person and can invade an infected person's spinal cord, causing paralysis . There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines to prevent polio. Those vaccines cost 14 cents each, most of the money going to frontline workers, most of whom are women, who are paid $4-5 per day ...

Angie Parlee of Sussex Area Domestic Violence Outreach was our first guest speaker of the new Rotary year. Angie shared the harrowing story of just how wide and deep an impact domestic violence has on families in the area, many of whom turn to her organization in desperate circumstances and often after multiple, previously unsuccessful attempts to leave their abusive situations. Angie, a survivor of abuse herself, shared the courage it takes to seek such help and the difficult road that still lies ahead for such survivors even after they seek it. Many have to rebuild their lives from scratch, navigating family courts, the RCMP and dire financial straits, and Sussex Area Domestic Violence Outreach offers critical help in that process for women and their families.

The Rotary Club of Sussex and the Interact Club of SRHS met today to raise the “ End Polio Now” flag. World Polio Day is celebrated each year on October 24th to raise awareness of Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio forever. Poliovirus is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. It can lead to muscle paralysis, disability, bone deformities and death. The first initiative to wipe out polio through mass vaccination of children began in 1985 with the launch of PolioPlus by Rotary International. According to the World Health Organization, as long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio. Failure to eradicate polio from these last remaining strongholds could result in as many as 200 000 new cases every year, within ten years, worldwide. Many survivors of polio will develop Post-Polio Syndrome later in life. The symptoms include weakness, fatigue, muscle atrophy, breathing and swallowing problems. Up to 50 to 70 percent of polio survivors may experience the disabling effects of Post-Polio Syndrome 25 to 45 years after their initial recovery from polio. There are approximately 125,000 Canadian polio survivors. Only two countries still have cases of wild poliovirus, Afghanistan & Pakistan. Rotary International will not quit until we eradicate poliovirus for good.

Let's meet this week's Rotary Club of Sussex member, Taylor McWhirter! Taylor was born and raised in the greater Toronto area. Taylor studied Business at Loyalist College in Belleville Ontario. She moved to Sussex almost three years ago on a whim with her now fiancé. She considers New Brunswick a completely new experience and is loving every minute of it! Taylor works as a Small Business Advisor & Agriculture Specialist for Scotiabank. She has always been amazed by business owners and their entrepreneurial spirit! She feels very lucky to be able to help grow businesses within Sussex. Her favourite part of the job is learning about her clients and helping big dreams become realities. It doesn’t hurt that she also gets to pet A LOT of cows and she considers that to be a huge job perk! She also operates her own small business located in La Bella Si Salon & Spa! The Glow Station is Taylor’s passion project and creative outlet. She loves empowering other women to look and feel their best! Taylor has been a Rotary member for just about a year now. She was introduced to Rotary by Julie Matthews and after the first meeting, she was hooked and loved the opportunity to learn more about Sussex, support the community, and meet like-minded individuals! Taylor is a soon-to-be mom and believes it is so important to show her future son the importance of volunteering and giving back to your community.

The Coats for Kids Program last year provided all six SWAC children with funds to purchase winter outerwear. As they were out “ shopping” this donation allowed them the opportunity to purchase a new coat, boots, or whatever they needed. As well, it covered the cost to assist in purchasing all the children’s siblings' hats, mitts, and gloves for the winter season. This is a well-received addition to the program and we are so excited to announce we will be doing the same thing this year! Presenting this year's cheque to assist with the purchase of winter wear is Rotary Club of Sussex member, Taylor McWhirter. If you are willing to donate a new or gently used coat, they can be dropped off at the Scotiabank on Main Street or the Salvation Army Thrift Store. If you wish to make a cash or gift certificate donation, please feel free to reach out!

This week - let's meet Rotary Member, Lou McNamara! Also, if you read until the end of the bio, let's see if you can guess which one of the three facts Lou stated is a lie! "My name is Lou McNamara, and I have been a member of the Rotary Club of Sussex for just about 17 years. My background is Radio Broadcasting and have been in radio media for just over 40 years, beginning with training in Toronto, Halifax, and then finally starting my actual on-air career with Humber Valley Broadcasting in Port Aux Basques NF, where I met my incredible wife…who puts up with me to this very day. So far so good! Presently I’m General Manager/Marketing for CJCW Radio in Sussex, joining Maritime Broadcasting Systems in 1986. In my role with CJCW Radio I have certified myself in Radio Marketing, helping local businesses grow their sales and marketing base. Assisting businesses, in whatever way I can, to increase their bottom line and contributing to their success has been the most satisfying part of my job. I’ve always said that Sussex and area is blessed to have its very own Radio Station. For those who own a business, or manage a business, I would strongly suggest joining the Rotary Club of Sussex. Since joining Sussex Rotary, and as a past President, I’ve got to know so many wonderful and kind business people with one common goal- to help our local Sussex and area, while at the same time developing their own leadership skills. With weekly lunchtime meetings I’ve found it so easy and convenient to attend. If you’re in business and would be interested in tangibly giving back to this area, I would highly recommend the Rotary Club of Sussex, where you can network with other business people, while at the same time giving back to this area." - I once worked for CHSJ Radio in Saint John
- I received East Coast AAB Award for Creative Writing/Production
- I also received the “Silver Sow Award” for the morning CJCW Agricultural Report

This year, the Rotary Club of Sussex is thrilled to be assisting with the Coats for Kids 2020 campaign. Each year, we try hard to put our attention on community needs. We have been working with organizations in the Sussex area to help meet the needs of children who need to stay warm this winter. We are so pleased to be able to work with the following partners this year to ensure as many children as possible will receive a winter jacket for the winter months: Each organization has a specific network of children that we can support.
Maybe you have a gently used coat for donation or want to purchase a new coat to donate? Maybe you just want to make a financial contribution or purchase a gift card for this purpose? If the answer is yes - we want to hear from you. Starting immediately, we are accepting coats at the The Salvation Army (138 Main Street, Sussex) or the Bank of Nova Scotia (635 Main Street) or by contacting us via Facebook so we can make arrangements for pick up. Rotarians help each other, and collectively help others. We look forward to working with our community partners on this important initiative!

This week let's meet our member.... Rhoda Wilson! Rhoda has been a Rotarian for 11 years. She joined when she was Community School Coordinator at Sussex Middle School and it blended well with the job. Presently Rhoda is the Host Coordinator in Sussex for Atlantic Education International and is involved in recruiting families to host international students. Organizing socials and activities for the students has built some amazing connections in the community and abroad. Rhoda even visited one of her students in Brazil a couple of years ago. Rhoda grew up in Moncton and she spent a few years working as an Administrative Assistant to the Executive Director of The Moncton Hospital. Rhoda left her position there and enrolled in a Bachelor of Science Program at Mount Allison University where she graduated with a degree in Chemistry. This was followed by a year of heart research working under the direction of Dr. William Driedzic and then by a one-year Education program offered at Mount Allison University. Rhoda worked on her third degree and graduated in 2006 from the University of Phoenix with a MA Ed in Curriculum and Instruction. Rhoda moved to Sussex in 1986 to become the Chemistry teacher at Sussex Regional High School. Throughout her teaching career Rhoda taught a variety of courses; and before she retired, she was teaching technology to Grade 9 students. Rhoda is married to Town Counselor, Tim Wilson, and has two sons – Samuel who is a medical student at McGill University and Izaak who just graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

This week, let's meet Robert Lockhart!
Did you know in May of this year, Robert celebrated 50 years as a Rotary Member? You are an inspiration to many Robert! What a milestone!
“My first Rotary meeting was in Dec., 1953 when my father took me to the annual Kentville Rotary children’s Christmas party where he, and my grandfather before him, were Rotarians. I knew right then that I wanted to join this group- they had ice cream, Tom & Jerry cartoons, gifts! Not to disappoint a prospective future Rotarian, Dad arranged for me to have “my” Rotary Dinner every Monday at my Great Aunts who lived next door, a weekly dinner I had right up until I graduated from Acadia University and joined NBTel in Saint John on May 20th, 1969.
Through Rotary, I gained so many mentors that enhanced my career and life through their friendships. I have been able to give back to the community through seniors projects like the Rotary Admiral Beatty restoration and Rotary Senior Citizen’s Housing, for the youth through the Boys’ & Girls’ Club and Rotary Foundation projects, and to help make PolioPlus a reality.
My proudest Rotary moment was on Dec. 25, 2014 when I presented our family of six with Paul Harris Fellowships.“ In May of 2020 Robert celebrated 50 years of active Rotary membership having been asked to join Rotary in Newcastle in May, 1970

Serving over 240 clients in the Sussex area, MAS is seeking to nurture partnerships within community groups to help provide support services integrating families. In conjunction with the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program, MAS assists newcomers with such activities as setting up bank accounts, arranging phones and living arrangements and providing second language support in English, French, German and Sign Language. The MAS wants to serve the local community in two ways- by helping these families integrate into their new home bringing diversity, new skills and trades to the region, and to help broaden the tax base and population to help maintain the community infrastructure. Alaina Lockhart, current Chairperson of the Board for the MAS, shared that in addition to supporting for their Board, the team is looking for volunteers for a variety of services.

Let's meet ROBERT KIMBALL! Robert has been a Rotarian since the Spring of 2009. He has served as Past President of the Sussex Rotary Club and current District 7810 Area 4 Rotary Governor. Robert joined Rotary for the opportunity to meet more friends and local leaders, to help build his network and leadership skills, and to travel for Rotary and give back through these initiatives. Most importantly, Robert joined to show his kids the importance of volunteering and being a part of a community. Of the three facts Robert has listed, can you guess which one is NOT true? - Robert has been a Craft Beer Connoisseur since 2009 (before it was cool) and has tried over 2650 different beers. - Robert spent 4 years in Florida building roller coasters in a former career but decided to come back to join the family business in 2005. - Robert has Co-Hosted Rotary Vocational Exchange guests from Brazil and India and loves to try new food from countries around the world.

On Monday, October 5th, 2020, guest speaker Captain Lance Gillard, introduced by Rotary President Angie Cummings, addressed the Sussex Rotary Club regarding the local Salvation Army. A church to some, a thrift store to others- the Salvation Army of Sussex wants to support the local community. There are many opportunities to help, especially given the current pandemic. Covid19 has created a more urgent need for volunteers and time commitments. Helping can take any form - even small efforts make a difference as the Salvation Army of Sussex is overwhelmed and understaffed. Lance offered to provide a tour to the Club of the facility and its operations and welcomed any willing to volunteer hours to help. Special thanks were extended to Phil Sherwood and the local Sobeys team, as well as Blair Hyslop and the team from Mrs. Dunster's, for their overwhelming support in the past months. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact Lance at the Salvation Army of Sussex.

When the new Civic Centre opened, Lara reconnected with her love of aquatics. It was during this time that she started bringing clients to the pool and soon became a regular herself. Lara was approached to volunteer in childminding and then started teaching aquatic lessons. Four years later, she is now the Co-Manager and Aquatics Coordinator of the Nutrien Civic Centre.
Lara has a background in customer service and human services which lend themselves perfectly to her day to day responsibilities at the Centre. She has often been heard saying this is a culmination of everything she loves and has found her spot. She feels by joining Rotary she now has a greater ability to give back to the community."
Welcome to Sussex Rotary, Lara!

Sunday, October 4th, 2020, was a beautiful day for the first annual fall 'Hike to the Bluff!'
Rotarians brought family members, friends, and of course, their pets for a stroll through the woods until reaching the rock cliff, also known as “The Bluff.” Social time, with Liv’s homemade cookies, was enjoyed before the downhill trek back. The Bluff has become a family-favourite hike with over 100 vehicles lined along the road to enjoy the beautiful fall day. For the action shots and scenic captures, check out our gallery!

On a brisk, rainy Friday evening, September 18th, 2020, the Sussex Rotary descended on the local Giermindl's Old Bavarian Restaurant for what would be our inaugural fall Club social. With over thirty in attendance, the initially quiet evening warmed up like a wiener schnitzel as great German cuisine was coupled with great company and conversation.
German meals were served with a variety of traditional German beverages with which to enjoy them. The restaurant provided musical entertainment throughout the evening; first serving up a repertoire of traditional German backdrop music and, as crowd participation increased, shifted to less traditional 99 Luftballons, Der Piano Mann and Krokodil Rock.
Lots of conversation ensued and, while the dance floor was unavailable due to COVID restrictions, our very own Alex Coffin treated the facility to a sampling of his interpretation of time-honoured German choreography...

Rotary International President-elect Holger Knaack is encouraging Rotarians to seize the many opportunities Rotary offers to enrich their lives and the communities they serve. Knaack, a member of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany, revealed the 2020-21 presidential theme, Rotary Opens Opportunities, to incoming district governors at the Rotary International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, on 20 January. Rotary isn’t just a club for people to join, but rather “an invitation to endless opportunities,” said Knaack, who becomes president on 1 July. He emphasized that Rotary creates pathways for members to improve their lives and the lives of those they help through service projects. “We believe that our acts of service, big and small, create opportunities for people who need our help,” Knaack said.

Sussex Rotary shared our Christmas Luncheon together on, Monday, December 16th. We had a full house and a packed agenda.
Rhoda explained the day’s giving to LEAP. Each year at the last meeting in December, we "pass the hat" (envelope) to give to a good cause for the Christmas Season. This year, our very own Interact Club donated $150 to the LEAP program (Leisure Enjoyment for All People) at the Nutrien Civic Centre.
LEAP is a financial assistance program that focuses on raising much-needed resources to support those with financial barriers to physical activity. Supporting the campaign supports youth and families within our community.
Our Interact Youth wanted to help other youth in the area and Rotarian Shelley Vail challenged our Club to show support by matching or surpassing this amount at our meeting today.
The hat was passed around to collect and the Club exceeded $300! Way to energize giving Interact!

"Remembrance Day (sometimes known informally as Poppy Day owing to the tradition of the remembrance poppy) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Following a tradition inaugurated by King George V in 1919, the day is also marked by war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of the First World War on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" (source) Wikipedia contributors. "Remembrance Day." Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. Club members purchased tulip bulbs for $20/ box and raised just over $5300. The power of Rotary allowed the different levels to match this amount, creating a final of $33180. The work that was done was featured in the Zone 24 & 32 October Newsletter.

On Nov. 19, 2018, Christine Moffett introduced John Dunfield, an employee of Bell Aliant, and also an owner of the new Sussex Craft Distillery.
John explained that he and a group of friends had an investment and decided to diversity and do something to promote the economy of Sussex. Getting the proper licensing had its challenges, but perseverance paid off.
Learning the art of distilling was a process that included visiting others and also studying to obtain his MD – Master Distiller.
A market survey revealed there were a limited number of distilleries in New Brunswick producing spirits, so the team embarked on their new adventure. The company’s strategy is to build a story about the Sussex area with several products being given names reflective of our community.
John came with a gift give-away. Tickets from the Chase the Joker weekly draw were used for a second to find a winner of the gift pack. Pictured above with Rhoda and John is Interact Member Kegan Wallace, who drew the lucky number for his mother, Tammy Scott-Wallace. Rhoda will deliver the gift on John and Kegan’s behalf.

Dr. Lennox became President of Kingswood University in 2015. Dr. Lennox has authored six books and holds various degrees, including a Ph.D. from Drew University and has specialized in Old Testament studies and ministry.
Considering that all universities in the Maritimes were started and developed by different denominational churches and that Western Civilization based on Judeo-Christian principles, Dr. Lennox asked that Christian education be considered as a value-added option. Dr. Lennox shared his perspective that Christian school at his institution offers every aspect of education that other secular universities do, but also, includes character development as an essential part of the curriculum.
Dr. Lennox finished by sharing the financial benefit of Kingswood University to the economy of Sussex and its willingness to share facilities like the Benson Athletic Complex.

On Oct. 22, 2018, Rotarian Bob Tremblett introduced Tanya Nace, the Canadian Executive Director for World Hope International.
Tanya was born in PEI, attended Kingswood University, and has been involved in international missions for several years. Last fall, she transitioned to the position of Executive Director for World Hope Canada. Tanya, in turn, introduced Jo Anne Lyon.
Jo Anne Lyon is the founder of the World Hope humanitarian arm of the Wesleyan Church. The organization emerged when supporting victims of the Afghanistan War and aiding post-war efforts for Sierra Leone. Jo Anne is a member of the Rotary Club of Fishers in Indiana. Her Club has partnered with World Hope in drilling wells in the country of Sierra Leone.
Bringing safe drinking water to the country of Sierra Leone has made a big difference in the community. Not only are fewer children dying, but women and children who traditionally were the carriers of water have more time to go to school. Education leads to better employment opportunities and less human trafficking.

Rotarian Bob Tremblett introduced Silvana. Silvana is a native of Bathurst and joined Rotary in 1995, and three years later, she became President. Silvana was attracted to Rotary because of its funding for physically challenged children.

A huge thank you goes out to Bob and Jeanette Black for hosting our summer social!
It was great to see friends, spouses and children of Rotarians as well.
One Rotarian, in particular, we would like to mention is Angie’s cousin, Tim Bannister, who is a fellow Rotarian currently living in Africa. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Arusha, Tanzania, District 9211. He has a fascinating blog. Take a look if you get a chance!

Sussex Rotary is so pleased to have been a partner in the creation of Leonard’s Gate, which is seen here during July 1 and the Sussex Summerfest.
The picture above was taken off Facebook on July 8, 2018, with the caption: “What a beautiful day to spend with my sister Nancy Barnett, and lots of other participants, enjoying the Mural Scavenger Hunt which was part of Sussex Summerfest. Answering tricky questions on our 27 wall murals in town, took much of our morning and afternoon, but we managed to finish in time and enjoyed the BBQ and music at Leonard’s Gate. We both won prizes, along with many other participants. A big thank-you goes to all the organizers and volunteers that helped with the 2nd year of this fun event. So much fun, and a great way to learn more about what these wonderful murals depict!”

Rhoda Wilson introduced Donna Gilchrist, Chair of our Club Rotary Foundation Committee as our speaker on May 7, 2018.
Donna gave a presentation on the Rotary Foundation and handed out donation forms. The Rotary Foundation has one of the best ratings as a charitable organization and operates with a little administrative cost.
The Rotary Foundation is set up in such a way that there are many beneficiaries. Clubs with a membership that regularly donate become eligible for District grants in their area.
Once a member donates $1,000, he or she is recognized with a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition certificate and pin. Each subsequent $1,000 total is rewarded with a different type of pin-up to a total of nine.
One of the goals of this year is to increase our Club giving to the Rotary Foundation.

At our meeting on Apr. 9, 2018, we welcomed Elaine Shannon (left), who provided advice on how to make the most of your time in the workplace.
Each attendee was given a list of priorities and asked to pick five that were the most important to them. Elaine recommended evaluating everything through the “funnel” of our main priorities and also to take 30 minutes at the end of the day to set priorities for the next day. This allows an individual to “hit the ground running” at the start of each new day.
Elaine is pictured with President Lisa Brown holding the “thank you for being our speaker” booklet, to be donated to the Sussex Public Library in her name.

Elissa represented Regional Service Commission 8 (RSC8) and provided an informative presentation about the three-bag garbage system.
Although some residents have concerns about the system being too complicated, the amount of garbage diverted out of the landfill site is expected to increase by 70%.
The three-bag system is designed to reduce costs and increase revenue through reduced contamination of green garbage (organics) which can then be sold as Grade A compost. Landfill cells cost two million dollars, and in the past, cells have lasted only two years...

On May 8, 2017, Angie Cummings introduced fellow Rotarian Don Ingersoll.
Rev. Don Ingersoll gave a Classification Talk. Don has spent all of his career in Southern New Brunswick. He grew up in Saint John, attended Kingswood University, and then graduated from a school in upstate New York. Don started off studying music but later transferred to a ministry program. Don is responsible for transforming Caton’s Island into a children’s camp after the Wesleyan Church purchased it. Don pastored Kings Valley Wesleyan in Quispamsis for 16 years and then 12 years at Moncton Wesleyan. Presently he is on staff at Sussex Wesleyan. Don talked about churches having a role in “adding value” to individuals and how society has been moving away from church attendance. At one point, attendance drove engagement, but presently engagement is what drives attendance. This is a societal change and a philosophical shift. In telling his story, Don shared how a “crisis of faith” lead him to search for a pearl of eternal worth. Robert Short thanked Rev. Don for a very interesting talk.

The program will pay mileage for the drivers and provide service for community members who have a difficult time getting to necessary health-related appointments. A yearly membership of $20 is charged to clients of the Dial-A-Ride, but the long-term cost savings to them is considerable...

After 44 weekly drawings of a card from the deck, Rotarian Bruce Northrup finally drew the winning Joker on Dec. 12, 2016, with nine cards left in the pack. The winner’s pot had grown to $816.50.
Bruce announced when picking the lucky Joker that he would be donating half his winnings to the Salvation Army. Pictured here are Major Stan Folkins, who just happened to be Rotary’s guest speaker for the meeting, Rotarian Bruce, Donna Gilchrist, Chairperson of the weekly draw, and President Rob Driscoll. Congratulations, Bruce!
The Chase the Joker club fundraiser started on Nov. 16, 2015, as a supplement to the weekly fines to help raise funds to offset the internal operating costs of the Club. Thus the first deck also contributed $816.50 to the Club operating funds. Job well done, Donna!

On Nov. 2, 2015, Cecile Matheson, Executive Director of Sussex Vale Transition House, spoke about the history and present role of the Transition House in the community.
Cecile showed a short video about domestic violence and its prevalence in our society.
The Sussex Vale Transition House opened in 1991, and it is open 24/7. The present facility has four bedrooms and nine beds.
The Gold Rush 50/50 has been the facility’s best fundraiser and is presently bringing in $4,000 a week. The Government provides 50% of the finances.
In 2014 there were 40 women and 30 children served. The House needs renovations, and the Rotary Club of Sussex may be called upon for assistance once the plans are in place.

Both Mark Murray and Gilles Volpé came as representatives of Enbridge Gas NB as our guest speakers on Oct. 26, 2015.
Gilles spoke about the need for sustainable resources of fuel and highlighted the importance of natural gas and its efficiencies.
Enbridge Gas NB has allocated over four billion dollars for research; however, the majority of this money will not be given locally as New Brunswick is considered too risky a territory to invest dollars.
Gilles feels that natural gas will guide the transition between sustainable resources and renewable resources.
